Young Athletes Ignite Paarl at Curro Podium South Meeting

Paarl came alive with the sound of sprinting and the sight of soaring jumps as over 1,400 young athletes descended on the Dal Josafat Stadium. The Curro Podium South meeting served as a vibrant showcase of South Africa’s burgeoning school athletics talent.

National champions and record-holders were among the competitors, highlighting the event’s significance. The two-day gathering proved why youth athletics in the country is in such a strong state.

A Platform for Future Stars

Cindy van der Merwe, Portfolio Manager for Curro Sport, emphasized the event’s core mission. She stated that the Curro Podium series gives young athletes a platform to compete at the highest school level.

The primary school edition was a major success, offering children aged 7 to 13 their first experience of large-scale competition. Durbanville Primary, Gene Louw, and Courtrai Primary led the team standings, while young track stars like Martus Schoeman and Lisa Krige delivered impressive performances.

Record-Breaking Performances Unfold

The high school meet featured electrifying performances. Jayden Fourie from Hoërskool Outeniqua nearly matched his personal best in the U17 long jump with a 7.62m leap. Fourie confidently declared his ambition, stating he is coming for the 8-metre mark.

In field events, Michaela Spocter of Meridian Pinehurst won the high jump by clearing 1.75m. Meanwhile, African discus champion Mila Ueckermann from Hoërskool Stellenbosch achieved a new personal best with a massive throw of 53.76m. On the track, Miche van Staden from Curro Durbanville secured a impressive double victory in the 100m and 200m sprints.

The series continues to grow, now recognized as one of South Africa’s premier school athletics events. It will culminate in a national Grand Finale at Pilditch Stadium in February. Reflecting on the event’s success, Cindy van der Merwe noted that every record broken and every personal best achieved is why they host the Curro Podium. She affirmed that South Africa’s sporting future is bright and it starts at events like this.
