Tragic Drowning Claims Seven-Year-Old in Cape Town Dam

A seven-year-old boy has tragically drowned in a water-filled trench in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting police to open an inquest docket.

Community members report that the child, Likhanye Cwethu, was playing near the dam with a four-year-old. He reportedly took a makeshift boat onto the water when it overturned, leading to the fatal drowning.

Tragic Discovery and Rescue Attempt

A community member discovered Likhanye’s body floating in the water. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that medical personnel declared the child deceased at the scene. The circumstances are under investigation.

Upon hearing the news, two teenage boys, both 16, rushed to help. Yanga Tsewu, a swimmer, entered the dam to search for the body. His friend, Luthando Mpilo, also jumped in and spotted the child. Yanga used the makeshift boat to bring Likhanye to shore, where he attempted CPR, but it was too late.

Residents expressed fear about entering the deep water to attempt a rescue. Anita Matiwane, one of the first on the scene, stated, “I cannot swim. I was scared to get into the water, it is very deep.”

This incident has highlighted ongoing safety concerns in the area. Community leader Nosi Nkuhlu revealed that several children have drowned in these dams before. She criticized the lack of preventive measures, such as fencing.

“These dams are worrying because we are now starting [summer], and these children will continue playing here,” Nkuhlu said. The recurring tragedy of a child drowning underscores the urgent need for intervention.

Following the confirmation of her son’s death, Likhanye’s mother was reportedly taken to the hospital after collapsing from the shock.

City of Cape Town Response

When questioned about safety measures and recreational facilities, the City of Cape Town noted that the Marikana settlement exists on mostly private land. The City stated it has purchased some land portions and, once approvals are finalised, will begin upgrading the settlement for enhanced basic service delivery. The community awaits action to prevent another child from drowning.
