According to a survivor’s account, eleven people were inside the Philippi East residence when armed assailants stormed the property. “Two went to the shops to buy hookah pipe flavour. When they came back, their friends were all dead,” Sisa recounted. The survivor reportedly saved himself by pretending to be dead, lying beneath the other victims.
The witness told Sisa that the gunmen first robbed everyone of their phones before opening fire. Another woman narrowly escaped the Philippi East massacre because the shooters didn’t open her door. Residents described the scene as something from a horror film, with one neighbor expressing the community’s terror: “We are living in fear—this is not a better life but trauma.”
As detailed in the complete version, there are several key factors to consider.
Community Paralyzed by Fear
Ward councillor Zukisani Sophazi confirmed the community’s paralyzing fear. “No one is gathering outside. People are too scared,” he admitted, highlighting the severe impact of this violent incident on daily life.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed that authorities have launched a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrators. Detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit are actively pursuing all leads in the Philippi East investigation.
Western Cape Commissioner Lt General Thembisile Patekile strongly condemned the killings. He urged residents to assist police in tracking down those responsible for the Philippi East massacre, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving this devastating crime that has left an entire neighborhood living in fear.
