A Lagos State University undergraduate, Billy Oyiza, has confessed that a deep hunger for power and personal fear drove him to kill a fellow student. The 41-year-old, recently released from the Kirikiri custodial centre, expressed profound regret for the 2018 murder that derailed his life and studies.
The fatal incident originated from violent clashes between rival cult groups at Yaba College of Technology. The conflict spilled over to the Lagos State University campus when members sought reinforcements. Oyiza reported that after his own group suffered losses, he targeted a neighbour he discovered was aligned with a rival faction.
### A Deadly Ambition for Power
Oyiza revealed that his actions were fueled by a desire for retaliation and a significant promotion within his group. He sought to become “XY,” a position that would grant him control over the region. “In an attempt to avenge our loss and earn a promotion to XY, I decided to take him out,” Oyiza stated. He admitted that this intense hunger for power and fear of his rival led him to stage a confrontation.
He ambushed the victim, who was unaware of Oyiza’s affiliations. “He didn’t see it coming because he didn’t know I was one of them. If he had known, he would have come for me first,” Oyiza said. He detailed shooting the young man in the left side of the chest, aiming for a fatal spot as taught in his training, which resulted in immediate death.
### Life After a Fateful Decision
Following the killing, authorities arrested Oyiza, charging him with murder. His subsequent imprisonment at the Kirikiri custodial centre had devastating ripple effects, including the death of his father. Now free, Oyiza acknowledges the immense pain he caused and the long-term legal and personal burdens his family now bears. His story serves as a stark warning about the destructive consequences of a hunger for power and the irreversible cost of cult-related violence.
