The incident originated from violent 2018 clashes between rival cult groups at Yaba College of Technology. When members sought support from Lagos State University, campus-based affiliates were deployed, escalating tensions after a series of retaliatory killings. Oyiza reported discovering a neighbour on campus was aligned with a rival group. Seeing his own side suffering losses, he felt a strong desire to retaliate and improve his standing within his group.

Driven by a hunger for power, Oyiza sought an internal promotion known as “XY,” which would place him in charge of the region. He believed that taking decisive action would restore balance and secure his advancement. This intense hunger for power led him to plan a fatal encounter.
