Lagos Police Bust Car-Snatching Syndicate, Recover Stolen Vehicles

The Lagos State Police Command has dismantled a notorious car-snatching syndicate, arresting key members and recovering five stolen vehicles. This major breakthrough highlights the ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in the state.

Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade paraded the suspects at their Igando hideout on Friday. He confirmed the arrest of three gang members at a residence that also served as their operational base. From this location, they planned and executed attacks on unsuspecting motorists.

Police Expose Gang’s Method

Fayoade detailed the syndicate’s method of operation. The suspects specialized in pretending to be passengers before robbing their victims mid-transit. They would then dispossess the drivers of their vehicles.

The police commissioner issued a strong warning to private car owners. He specifically cautioned civil servants and professionals against picking up unknown passengers for money to offset fuel costs. He described the practice as extremely risky and a common way victims fall prey to these criminals.

Recoveries and Wider Operations

Investigations revealed that while one robbery occurred in the Lekki-Ajah area, the syndicate’s operations extended beyond Lagos. The group had also carried out similar car-snatching activities in Oyo and Edo States.

Fayoade stated that a probe into a single robbery case led to unravelling the entire gang. The police have so far recovered five vehicles. Among the items recovered from the suspects were a pump-action rifle, an English-made pistol with erased serial numbers, several live cartridges, and assorted charms.

The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to public safety. He assured residents that Lagos remains safe and that the police are on top of their game in crime prevention and detection.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. Fayoade emphasized that criminals live among the community. He asked people to report individuals without clear means of livelihood or those moving at odd hours.

The commissioner also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for providing crucial logistical and tactical support. This continued backing strengthens the fight against the car-snatching syndicate and other criminal elements in Lagos.
