Grade 1 & Grade 8 Admissions: Key Dates and Process

Gauteng education authorities have announced that school admission notifications for the 2026 academic year will begin distribution on 16 October. Matome Chiloane, the Provincial Education MEC, is urging parents to conduct thorough research before accepting any placement offers.

Parents Must Understand Fee Structures

Chiloane stressed that parents must fully understand school fee structures and other critical details before making their final decision. He issued a firm warning that changes of mind after accepting a placement will not be accommodated. The MEC revealed the province has already achieved an 88.39% placement rate for Grade 1 and 8 pupils. Nearly 90% of parents will receive placement offers via SMS. However, 51,947 applications remain incomplete and will not be considered in this placement round.

Chiloane was particularly stern regarding fee-paying schools. He stated that parents who applied to such institutions are obligated to pay the required fees. The department will not entertain requests for exemptions or transfers based on affordability issues discovered after placement. He emphasized that parents who choose fee-paying schools but refuse to pay are contributing to institutional strain. The MEC also pointed out that several no-fee schools are among the province’s top performers.

Application Process Clarified

The MEC clarified a significant misconception about the school application process. When parents select multiple schools, the department does not interpret the order as a priority ranking. All selected schools are considered equal choices. Appeals will only be accepted from parents whose children were placed at schools they did not select during their application. The province is dealing with immense pressure, having received around 820,000 applications for just over 820,000 combined Grade 1 and 8 places. Grade 8 faces the most significant squeeze with only 6,640 spaces reportedly remaining. The department identified 408 schools that received applications far exceeding their capacity.

Incomplete Applications and Next Steps

Applications are only considered complete with all necessary documentation, including a valid and authentic proof of residential address. Parents with incomplete applications will not have their children placed now and must wait for the system to reopen on 11 December to access any remaining spaces.

Parents will have seven days to accept or reject placement offers. After this period, placements will be automatically confirmed. The MEC expressed confidence that 100% placement for completed applications will be achieved before the end of November.
