Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki has permanently expelled three students for the illegal possession of firearms. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Awoke, made the announcement during the inauguration ceremony for the newly elected Students’ Union Government executives for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Professor Awoke stated that the decisive action was taken to serve as a strong deterrent to other students. He declared that the era of cultism and related vices is over within the institution. The Vice-Chancellor issued a stern warning that any student found guilty of cultism, examination malpractice, or possessing weapons meant to intimidate fellow students or staff will face immediate expulsion.

Crackdown on Campus Security

The three expelled students were reportedly arrested while in possession of guns and live ammunition. This arrest occurred during the recent Students’ Union Government elections held at the university. The university management has taken a zero-tolerance stance against any activity that threatens the safety and academic integrity of the campus.

The management officially identified the expelled individuals as Azubike Lawrence from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science; Enyinnaya Ibe Kenneth from the Department of Architecture; and Njoku Joshua from the Department of Animal Science. This expulsion for the unlawful possession of firearms underscores the institution’s commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment. The university’s action against the unlawful possession of firearms sends a clear message about its priorities.
