Delyse Grenfell’s story reminds us what it means to truly live. Her journey shows an undefeated human spirit through years of illness and recovery. At 63, she embodies strength and courage.
A Long Road of Resilience
Delyse’s health challenges began in 2009. At 46, she received a breast cancer diagnosis. She faced it head-on and emerged stronger. In 2013, a holiday in Mauritius turned critical. She suffered a brain aneurysm and spent 18 days in a South African ICU. Her miraculous recovery defied all odds.

Another major challenge arrived in 2021. A sharp pain led to a stage 4 liver cancer diagnosis. Doctors discovered a 23cm tumour in her colon, which had already spread. In June 2022, she endured a nine-hour surgery to remove the colon tumour and several liver lesions. Some lesions remained for future treatment.
Facing the Future with Hope
As detailed in the complete version, there are several key factors to consider.
Hope appeared with a referral for a potential liver transplant. Unfortunately, this option was not viable. With no further surgeries possible, Delyse began lifelong chemotherapy. She fights not just to survive, but to live fully. Her days mix fatigue and pain with laughter, love, and gratitude.
Recently, her doctors stopped the Stivarga chemotherapy. This treatment gave her the best quality of life. Each course costs R60,000, making her dependent on public support to continue. A BackaBuddy campaign helps fund her ongoing care.
Delyse’s spirit remains unbroken. “I don’t measure my life by the battles I’ve faced, but by the love, laughter, and grace that have carried me through them,” she says. “Cancer may live in my body but it will never own my story.”
She reflects on her incredible resilience. “I’ve survived breast cancer. I’ve survived a brain aneurysm. I’ve survived major surgery. Through it all, I’ve kept moving forward one step, one breath, one moment at a time. My body may be in a battle, but my soul remains undefeated.”
Delyse Grenfell’s journey is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her courage continues to inspire all who know her story.
