The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Chief Emeka Rollas, has been detained by the police in Umuahia, Abia State, following allegations of imposing an unelected chairman on the guild’s Abia State chapter.
The issue began after the election of David Onyebuchi Amalaha as Chairman of the AGN Abia State chapter on May 20, 2023, in Umuahia. Despite Amalaha’s election, the guild has faced ongoing legal battles as Amalaha sought to prevent the national body of the AGN from installing interim leadership.
Guild members, including Chika Okezie, Egwuatu Daniel, and Nathaniel Nwoko, have criticized Chief Rollas, accusing him of undermining the guild’s unity by appointing multiple interim chairmen since 2023, allegedly ignoring the members’ democratic process.
The situation escalated on Thursday when Chief Rollas organized a meeting in Umuahia, reportedly excluding key stakeholders and the elected chairman, Amalaha. This led to protests and a disruption of the meeting, prompting police intervention to restore calm.
It was reported that a petition had previously been filed against Chief Rollas at the Zone 9 Police Headquarters. Following this, he and actor Emmanuel Ehumadu, popularly known as Labista, were detained.
